# What Is a Forward Deployed Creative?

_Luma was the first AI company to employ senior creative professionals, called Forward Deployed Creatives (FDCs), to directly support creative teams using AI and close the gap between AI capability and real creative output. Unlike trainers or consultants, FDCs work on live briefs alongside your team, build workflows calibrated to your specific brand standards, and create leave-behind systems that your team owns. _

**What Is a Forward Deployed Creative (FDC)?
**Forward Deployed Creatives are AI creative experts who work directly with Luma enterprise customers on live briefs, and build workflows that close the gap between AI capabilities and desired creative results. It's the Palantir forward-deployed model applied to creative AI adoption.

****

## How Luma brought the forward deployed model to creative AI

The idea of forward deployed comes from how Palantir thought about software deployment in the early 2010s. Palantir pioneered the Forward Deployed Engineer, sending engineers directly into customer organizations to build in the field rather than ship from the outside. The insight was simple: complex software deployed into complex organizations fails without someone embedded who understands both the product and the environment it is entering.

Luma applied that model to creative AI. With one important difference: the wall creative teams hit is not technical. It is cultural, aesthetic, and deeply personal. It requires someone with genuine creative credibility, not just product knowledge, to earn trust and drive real change from the inside.

## Building the case for the new FDC role

Prince Boucher, Head of Forward Deployed Creatives at Luma, made the case for this role on April 8, 2026.

Luma's FDC team started with 2 people. It grew to 3. Today there are 8, working embedded inside some of the world's leading agencies and brands, including Publicis Groupe, Dentsu, Serviceplan, and Mazda.

## What an FDC actually does

An FDC is a senior creative professional who has done the work, directed it, and shipped it under pressure. An FDC is not a trainer, not a customer success manager, and not a consultant who delivers a deck and disappears.

They sit alongside a creative team and figure out together, on live projects, how AI fits into how that specific team actually makes things. In practice that means using their creative experience to:

- Map where a team's current process breaks down
- Identify which workflows solve real problems for their specific outputs
- Build custom solutions calibrated to their aesthetic standards and approval processes
- Stay in the relationship long enough for the change to stick
- Deliver playbooks and capabilities that stay with the team long-term

## Why creative AI adoption is harder than it looks

Creative teams are not like other enterprise software buyers. Their workflows are accumulated instinct, training, taste, and a finely tuned sense of what good looks like. Asking them to integrate a new AI tool is not a neutral request. It asks them to interrogate something they have spent years building their professional identity around.

The roles that exist to support software adoption, customer success, technical onboarding, solutions architecture, are excellent at what they are designed for. But they were not designed for the moment before all of that, when a creative team has to decide whether to actually change how they work. That moment requires creative credibility. Someone who can walk into a brand studio, sit down with an art director, and speak as a practitioner, not as a product representative.

## Why do AI-enabled teams need an FDC?

Every enterprise creative team that has tried to adopt an AI tool has hit the same wall.

The demo looks promising. The capabilities are real. But when a creative director sits down with their team and tries to actually use it on a live brief, with real brand standards and real deadlines, the gap between what was shown and what the team can do on day one is enormous. That gap does not close on its own.

The only thing that closes it is the right person.

Luma built a role around that person. Forward Deployed Creatives, or FDCs, work on live briefs alongside your team, build workflows calibrated to your brand standards, and leave behind systems your team owns. They are the reason Luma enterprise clients do not just adopt AI. They change how they make work.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What does FDC stand for?

FDC stands for Forward Deployed Creative. An FDC is a senior AI creative professional who embeds directly with enterprise teams to close the gap between AI capability and real creative output.

### Is a Forward Deployed Creative the same as a consultant?

No. A consultant advises from the outside. An FDC works from the inside, on live briefs, producing real work alongside your team and building systems that stay with your organization after the engagement ends.

### Is this the same as AI training?

Training happens, but it is not the role. An FDC learns how your team works, builds workflows calibrated to your specific output and brand standards, and drives adoption through doing real work together, not through a curriculum.

### What kinds of teams work with Luma FDCs?

Large creative agencies, global in-house marketing teams, and enterprise production organizations. Teams that are serious about AI-powered creative production and need someone embedded to make it work at scale and at quality.
